100th anniversary of the end of the First World War Commemoration Service

On Monday 12th November we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War with a service on the school playground led by our year 6 children.   A range of poems and accounts from soldiers were read aloud to the whole school and parents.  Faith from Flamingo class read a verse from Robert Laurence Binyon’s famous poem ‘For The Fallen’

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

On Friday 9th November, parents were invited into school to help make poppies which we placed on the school field.  Faith and her nanny came up with the idea of making the poppy display using plastic bottles so we invited Nanny Jane to be our special guest and to lay a poppy wreath amongst the poppies.

On a beautiful sunny morning, the service was a moving tribute to all those who have lost their lives in WW1 and all the conflicts since.

Harry’s Rainbow – Thank you!

A big thank you to all our families for supporting us on Friday 16th November with the Harry’s rainbow appeal.  As you can see in the photograph, the children looked amazing in all their bright colours and as a school we raised £280 for the charity.  This money is going to be put towards buying a range of books which the charity needs to support bereaved families.

Cold Harbour Poetry Week – 12th to 16th November 2018

A huge well done to all children who recited a November poem to their class during Poetry Week. The effort and hard work many of the children went to was very impressive. Children who went through to the semi-final earned two points for their house and finalists earned five points. Our final on Thursday 15th November 2018 had a representative from each house from all phases and they performed their poems to the whole school. The standard was very high which gave the judges a difficult job. Congratulations to our winners Rian-Ray (Sparrow), Cheryl (Hummingbird) and Hadassah (Kingfisher). Winners received ten points for their houses and a book prize of their choice.
.
On Friday 16th November 2018, poet Paul Delaney visited Cold Harbour and shared his poems with us all. All classes wrote poems during their English lessons following an inspiring worship from our visiting poet. Paul spent much of the day working on poetry with Kingfishers and Puffins. 4 children (Mckenzie, Zainab, Sharmina and Archie) were chosen to perform their poems in a poetry festival at Lord Grey Academy on Thursday 29th November 2018.  We wish you them the best of luck!
.
Finally, thank you for your support with our Book People book fair. Lots of books were sold and it was fantastic to see so many children excited about reading.

Visit from the Bishop of Buckingham

We were delighted the Bishop of Buckingham was able to visit on Monday 3rd December 2018.  He delivered a wonderful worship to the whole school and then spent the rest of the morning visiting each class who were able to demonstrate their knowledge and views on the true meaning of Christmas.  Bishop Alan stated how delighted he was with the children’s respectful behaviour.  He then met with Mrs Ryan and governors for a pioneering discussion around chaplaincy.
